Most people don’t like the idea of being a victim, but they are often unwilling to go through months of training to learn how to fight and no longer be one. Many people are just too busy to be jumping, kicking and punching in a dojo for hours, only to find that they may get their butts kicked anyway. The simple fact of the matter is that many martial arts styles don’t hold up in real world situations.

Back when we were all kids, many of us tried emulating the fighting techniques we saw in the martial arts films. While it was all fun and games among friends, we got hurt because we didn’t learn control. On the flip side, these tricks we took from the Wednesday night Kung Fu Theater didn’t work out to our advantage in the school yard.

What exactly was the problem with using the old Kung Fu movie tricks? The same thing that’s the problem with many martial arts schools. The forms and styles aren’t practical. Sometimes, in the heat of battle, we forget the fabulous kick style that smashed through 4 planks of wood. Ultimately, while we’re thinking things through, the bad guy is doing what comes naturally to him–using his normal movements and whatever other advantages to dominate you.

Now, what if you could use equally natural movements–attacks that you didn’t have to train to do–to take advantage of your opponent’s weaknesses? You can do this, and without sweating in a dojo, without fighting in meaningless tournaments, and without losing! Don’t think it’s possible?

Have you ever heard the saying, “Attack the knees and the biggest guy will fall?” This is a very true saying in real world fighting. It’s not just the knees that you can attack, either. Every, and I repeat, every person has weak spots, and they’re nearly all the same. Chances are, your opponent isn’t wearing a jock cup…take advantage of that. They can’t see if they’re blind, right? Take advantage of that, too.

This is ultimately where training in a gym fails in teaching self-defense. Especially if you get involved in tournaments and competitive level fighting. Attacking the universal weak spots is DISCOURAGED. How much do you want to bet that the guy mugging you doesn’t care about the “rules” of clean fighting?
